In pursuance of
its objective of enhancing performance and penetration in the telecommunications
industry, MTN Ghana has ensured the construction of a 4,000 kilometer of fibre
cable nationwide.
Beyond this remarkable achievement, MTN has increased its 3G
distribution sites with 1000 sites engineered across 170 districts nationwide.
Despite the huge investment, feeder, battery and fibre theft continue to have a
negative impact on the company’s ability to deliver effective quality services
to its customers.
2013 recorded 840 fibre theft, a figure higher than those
recorded in 2012 and 2014. These came to
light at a day’s forum held for editors of print and electronic media personnel
in the Upper East Region.

Akoto, who made the disclosure, said the company is in the process of finding
lasting solutions to secure its operational tools and systems.

Mr. Charles Osei
Akoto said following the recent complaints with regards to constant call drop
and poor network services; MTN has carried out a project to optimize the
network.
The project, he noted has been completed and it is expected to give
customers reliable and non-interruptive services.
Giving
an overview of the network distribution in the region, Mr Osei Akoto said MTN
has deployed 181 km fibre backbone from Bolgatanga to Tamale.
Currently the
region has 23 operational 3G sites with a current increase capacity from 256
megabits to 1.8 Gigabits transmission backbone.
The move, Mr Osei Akoto
observed, has led to an increase in the number of cell sites with higher
optimization. He said the company will soon embark on an expansion drive to
improve on its network coverage.
The Senior Manager, Corporate Services,
Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, said MTN is working on modalities to better the lot of
not only its subscribers, but the general populace through its corporate social
intervention dubbed ‘MTN Foundation’.
The Foundation, she pointed out, has reached out to most deprived
communities of the country.
It has also facilitated the organization of some
social events characterized by reality shows including MTN football academy and
MTN hitmaker among others.
The Foundation, she further, indicated had supported
the region in the area of education, health as well as economic empowerment.
The foundation has so far invested a whopping 15.5 million Ghana cedis into 92 major projects across the country plus
2.2 million other support services such as surgeries, yellow care and
scholarships for brilliant but needy students.
Mrs Fiagbenu, emphasized the
company’s resolve to make an exceptional impact on the lives of the rural poor
through its sustainable social interventions.
Mrs Fiagbenu, later thanked MTN
subscribers for making it possible for the company to exceed its 10 million
milestone and called on the general public to assist the company to achieve its
new vision of becoming the leader in the delivery of a bold new digital world
spiced with the creation of a district customer experience.
She however
encouraged people to take advantage of the varied MTN mobile money services.
