NADMO Presents Relief Item to Fire Victim

The Upper East Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation has presented some relief items to Chief Inspector Stephen Amewugah, whose bungalow was recently gutted by fire at Zuarungu, a suburb in Bolgatanga. 

The swift intervention follows an appeal made by the Upper East Regional Police Command aftermath the incident. The items include mattresses and mats, sets of blankets, used clothing, bags of rice and laundry soaps among other toiletries. 

Property running into thousands of cedis were completely destroyed by the fire. It took the timely intervention of personnel from the Zuarungu fire station to put the raging fire under control after salvaging some few items. 

A quick round the two bedroom bungalow by the victim, Chief Inspector Stephen Amewugah, witnessed some personal belongings being burnt beyond recognition leaving the debris.  

 Narrating the incident to Radio Ghana, Chief Inspector Amewugah who happens to be the station officer at the Zuarungu police station said the incident occurred on the evening of Monday January 22nd when the wife and his three other children were asleep. 

He said though the fire engulfed all his valuables, the family escaped unhurt. According to him, he first detected the fire from the ceiling of the kitchen before spreading to the other rooms. 

The cause of the fire is yet to be established but Chief Inspector Amewugah who is still counting his loses suspects that the incident might have been triggered by an electrical fault. 

He was grateful to NADMO, the police and personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service for their sense of responsiveness. 

Presenting the items, the Upper East Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Jerry Asamane sympathized with the victim and the family and assured them of NADMO’s support in providing further assistance in due course. 

He noted that the relief items will go a long way to provide some comfort for the time being. On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, the Bolgatanga Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Samuel Punobyin thanked NADMO for the gesture. 

He described the presentation as timely as it has come to alleviate the plight of the victim and the family. 

He pointed out that his office will do everything humanly possible to assist their colleague and called on concerned individuals and groups to come to their aid. 

Radio Ghana later engaged the Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Douglas Koyiri to ascertain the cause of the fire. 

He said though the incident is considered as a minor one, the degree of destruction is quite surprising.

 According to him, his office is yet to be briefed on the incident even though investigations are currently ongoing. Meanwhile, the Regional Police Command had on the interim provided some temporal accommodation for the victim and the family.

US Government keen on making Ghana a preferred investment hub: Ambassador Jackson

American companies has for the past 20 years invested over 10 billion dollars in various sectors of Ghana’s economy and hope to inject more in the coming years to provoke increased bilateral trade between the two countries.

 In an exclusive interview with Radio Ghana’s Isaac Asare, the US Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency, Robert Jackson said the United States is determined to making Ghana a preferred trade and investment hub and has to this effect identified garments and textiles as some of the few products that have great potential in the US market. 

According to him, the sector possess much resilience to changing the face of the country’s business outlook when duly prioritized. 

Ambassador Jackson admitted that trade and investment between Ghana and the US have witnessed a sharp decline over the period.  

 He said although the US government is keen on making Ghana a key investment hub, the country has failed in its bit to take advantage of the reviewed African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, a trade legislation which significantly enhances market access to the US for qualifying sub Saharan Africa countries. 

He added that despite the level of apathy, the US government strives to make huge investment in untapped potentials capable of turning the fortunes of the country around. 

Ambassador Jackson singled out garment and textiles among other products that have such potentials.

 He hinted that last year, Ghana exported about a million dollar worth of garments to the US and expressed the hope that by the end of the year, it will shot up to 30 million dollars due to its high demand. 

According to Ambassador Jackson, there exist some opportunities in the Agricultural sector, stressing that the past years has seen some agricultural products entering the US.

 He revealed export of orange juice from Ghana to the US has begun and that his office is in talk with the Trade Ministry to identify other agricultural products for export. 

Answering questions on delay of visas and high airfares, Ambassador Jackson noted that in as much as the US government is working to make visa acquisition quite easier for Ghanaians, the embassy had engaged the new Ghana’s Ambassador to the US to ensure that Americans applying for Visas to the country receives faster processes for increased bilateral trade and investment.
