Benyim Small Holder Farmers Cries for support


 
The Benyim Small Holder Farmers’ Co-operative Society of the Kassena-Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region is  calling on government to as a matter of concern expedite action in giving meaning to its promise of rehabilitating the abandoned Benyim dam in order to enable farmers undertake a large scale of agricultural activities to earn a living. This was contained in a statement signed by the leadership of the Benyim Small Holder Co-operative Farmers’ Society. According to the statement, farmers over the years have been confronted with the problem of inadequate provision of irrigation facilities, especially dams to enable them get water to embark on large scale farming activities in the municipality. It further explained that the recent low food production, food security and lack of sustainable income and economic progress for small-scale farmer in the community is attributed to the unavailability of irrigation, adding that farmers find it quite difficult to embark on the numerous vegetables production such as tomatoes, pepper, onions, cabbage among others in the dry season. It however appealed to the government to heed to the pressure of the poor farmers’ demand for irrigation dam since that can help them undertake agricultural activities during the dry season to  better their living conditions, hence paving way for them to fight poverty to its barest minimum. Meanwhile, the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, SADA, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, MOFA and other pro-poor policies under the various institutions are also charged to join the crusade in helping to revamp the dam which is aimed at ensuring food security in the community.
