The New Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area of the Upper East Region with the stool name, Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang,  has placed a permanent ban on record playing at social gatherings in the area.

The move forms part of measures to reduce the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy and curtail the continuous fallen standard of education in the area.

Speaking at the grand durbar to climax the maiden ‘Daa’ festival of the chiefs and people of Talensi, Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang, said the ban is necessary and it is crucial to salvage the future of the youth in the area.

He warned that appropriate sanctions will be meted out persons for non-compliance to the said directive.

The celebration of the maiden Daa festival was to offer thanksgiving to God and the ancestors for a good bumper harvest.

Its significance was to show appreciation to God for guiding them through a successful cropping and harvest season and to solicit his guidance for the ensuing year.

The Daa festival which is being marked for the first time following the assumption of the paramount chief provides an opportunity for the indigenes to fraternise and exhibit their rich cultural heritage to the outside world.

It was marked with pump and pageantry on the theme: ‘Cultural Development for Positive Social and Economic Growth of Talenteng’.

In attendance were traditional heads including queenmothers drawn from the various traditional areas.

In his welcome address, Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang thanked his subjects for the confidence repose in him and called for their continuous support to enable him deliver on his mandate.

He called for a fair share of development in the region and appealed to government to help resuscitate the northern star tomato factory.

For his part, the Talensi DCE, Edward Awunnore seized the platform to discourage the people from indulging in certain socio-cultural practices that retard the progress of the area.

He observed that practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and the giving out of school girls for early marriages as well dehumanizing widowhood rites have the tendency of derailing the path of development.

Such practices, he said were baseless and unacceptable.

Mr Awunnore however proposed institutional measures to halt these negativities, stating that all hands must be put on deck to wage a relentless war against such inhumane practices.

He also challenged the youth to maintain and respect the existing cultural values for posterity.

The colourful event was marked with various cultural performances to add colour to the event.

Among them were the Baare men and women groups, whose dance performances were excellently performed to the admiration of all present.

Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang was known in public life as Dr Robert Duameng Monsore, former MP for the Talensi Constituency on the ticket of the NPP. His exit paved way for the recent Talensi bye-election.
