Metropolitan, Municipal and District
Assemblies, MMDAs, have been admonished to gazette and enforce their sanitation
by-laws to promote environmental cleanliness.
Speaking at the Regional lunch marking the 10th anniversary of Zoomlion Ghana, the Upper East Regional Manager of the company, John Sackey said the country’s quest to achieving success on sanitation will be a mirage if sanitation by-laws enacted by the various assemblies are not ensured to the latter.
This, he noted, can only materialize if these by-laws are given legal backing to compel people to develop positive attitude towards the environment.
While acknowledging the assemblies for the strides made on sanitation, Mr Sackey further urged the general public to adapt to healthy lifestyles and participate fully in the National Sanitation Day Exercises.

Over the years the country has been battling
with poor sanitation despite vigorous public campaigns.
People litter indiscriminately, throw refuse into drains and engage in other poor sanitary practices including open defecation.
Moreover, majority of the country’s population is said to be living without access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation services as well as basic sanitation services.
The phenomenon is common in major towns and cities where there is exponential population growth in the wake of increased rural migration.
As a result of poor sanitary practices, the country continues to lose a fraction of its entire workforce to preventable diseases such as malaria and cholera.
Realizing the urgent need to salvage the situation, government partnered and engaged the expertise of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a fully owed Ghanaian company formed under the company’s Act in January 2006. Since its inception, Zoomlion Ghana has become a giant in the waste management and environmental sanitation operating in Ghana and Africa.
The Company has since become so indispensable to the effect that the name has been synonymous, extending its services to every corner of the country and beyond.
The Regional launch marking the 10th anniversary of the company was to take stock of their invaluable achievement over the years.
Addressing the gathering the Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana, John Sackey said though the country has made headway on sanitation, the attitude of the public towards the environment was still a challenge.
He however urged the MMDAs to enforce their sanitation by-laws by gazetting them.

East Regional Minister, Dr Robert Kuganab-Lem acknowledged the significant
contribution of Zoomlion to nation building, especially in the area waste
management and job creation.
He advised the company to come out with new innovations in their service delivery to enable them meet the current global challenges.
He described sanitation as a shared responsibility and called on the general public, the various assemblies and stakeholders to continue to partner the company in its quest to ensure proper waste management.
