The Head of
the Builsa Traditional Council, Sandem-Nab Azantilo, has challenged the
leadership of the Upper East Coordinating Council, RCC to put priority
attention on education high above all developmental issues affecting the growth
and development of the region. He bemoaned the continuous decline of academic
standards in the region, placing emphasis on the district’s appalling performance.
Sandem-Nab raised the concern when the Regional Minister, Dr Ephraim Avea Nsoh
paid a courtesy call on him at his palace. The visit was to officially present
and acquaint himself to the chiefs and people of the area as part of his
familiarisation tour to traditional councils and paramountcies in the region.
With him were heads of institutions including the regional police commander.
Nab Azantillo expressed joy over the appointment of the minister, saying it was
an honour to all teachers since both the chief and minister were teachers. He
however implored the minister to place premium on education in the region by
sponsoring brilliant but needy students to pursue higher education. He observed
that the northern sector was lagging behind in terms of education and called
for pragmatic steps to catch up with the other parts of the country. As a way
forward, Sandem-Nab asked government to help the district with a College of Education
as it will go a long way to enhance education in the area. He noted that the
college will supplement the effort of the regular teachers. Dr Nsoh pledged to
collaborate with the institutions concerned to salvage the fallen standards of
education. The minister’s tour also took him to Nakong, Katiu and Kayoro, where
interacted with the chiefs and people of the traditional councils. The issues that
ran through their interactions included inadequate nurses and teacher quarters,
provision of agricultural inputs, electricity, road network, as well as the
construction boreholes. At Nakong, Naba
Afagachie Banape, appealed to the minister to help upgrade the only CHP
Compound in the area since most nearby communities patronised the facility on
daily basis. He also appealed for a ready market to enable farmers to sell
their produce with ease. Dr Avea Nsoh assured the people of his resolve to
tackle and address the said challenges by involving the appropriate authorities.
He asked the chiefs to support the RCC and officially present to him their
concerns for prompt action.
