Nursing and expectant mothers at the maternity ward of the Bolgatanga Regional hospital have resorted to the use of window curtains as bed sheets. Hospital authorities are constraints to remedy the situation because the last time the hospital received subvention from the National Health Insurance Scheme was December last year. Interestingly, the amount received at the period was just a portion of the service rendered to card holding members of the scheme. Meanwhile, over 90 percent of clients that rely on the services of the hospital are card bearing members. This means that money accrued by hospital authorities is woefully inadequate, hence the decision to revisit the cash and carry system as the last resort. The move is to enable the hospital generate money to cater for the medical expenses of patients. The Medical Director at the hospital, Dr Razak Dakurugu, who confirmed the current development to Radio Ghana's Isaac Asare, said the facility was going through difficult times as it was bedeviled with both financial and human resources. Saddened by the situation, the Public Relations Officer of BONABOTO, a development oriented NGO, Stanley Abopaam, has lobbied some local radio stations to solicit support for the hospital in order to lessen their plight. As a way forward, a fund dubbed: ‘Operation donate a bedsheet’ has therefore been launched at Tanga Radio to assist in that regard. He hinted that donations to that effect have been pouring in from concerned groups and individuals in the region. He however payed gratitude to the donors and urged others to support the hospital for a worthy cause.
