Private Health Care Providers descend on NHIA over claims and tariffs

President of HISPAG, Upper East branch, Dr Francis Asaana

Upper East branch of the Private Health Care Providers Association of Ghana, HISPAG, says they will be compelled to resort to cash and carry should authorities of the NHIS  fail to speed up  the payment of claims owed them.
The group is subsequently calling on the scheme to as a matter of urgency produce a realistic drug and service tariffs to enable them meet their financial challenges.
The President of the Association, Dr Francis Asaana, who is also the Medical Director of Quality Health Centre in Garu, revealed that delay in the payment of claims has to an  extend  crippled  the finances of most private health facilities in the region.
Dr Asaana is therefore calling on the NHIA to come out with a clear schedule as to when payment will be made.
Beyond this, the association is giving them two months grace period to settle their claims of which failure will compel them to stop accepting NHIS cards at their facilities.
On the issue of low drug tariffs, Dr Asaana said since July last year, the drug tariffs have not been reviewed upwards despite several appeals and engagement with authorities of the scheme.
He said currently over 50 percent of the prices of drugs on the scheme list is quoted below the lowest market prices.
This, he explained, is affecting the operations of service providers, adding that if steps are not taken to address the issue, they will be left with no option than to import fake and cheaper drugs into the system.
He therefore gave the scheme up to the end of this month to come out with a realistic drug tariff else they will be resort to co-payment, which means patients will be made to make additional payment of drugs they purchase.
Dr Asaana, also complained about low service tariff and again called for an upward review to enable them meet the cost of surgical operations than what the scheme pays.

Residents bemoan poor road network

Michael Zuri, Leader of youth group

A youth group calling itself ‘Concerned Citizens of Nangodi-Yakote and Pelungu’ in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region has petitioned the office of the Regional Coordinating Council   through the Nabdam District Assembly to expedite action on the road network linking the three communities.
The Nangodi-Yakote- Pelungu stretch of road, the group bemoaned has been in a deplorable state since 2007.
Presenting the petition, the leader of the group, Michael Zuri described the condition of the road linking the three communities as pathetic.
He said portions of the road have remained a death trap, claiming the lives of innocent motorists that ply it. Moreover, some bridges connecting the said communities are broken down while parts of the road have been taken over by erosion.
Mr Zuri, lamented that the pace of development in the area has been in limbo due to the bad nature of the road. He therefore requested government to   give the road a since it road connects other business centres from  Bawku,  Zebilla, Nangodi to the Pelungu Market, which serves as a commercial hub for  the Nabdam district.
For his part, the former Presiding Member of the Nabdam Assembly, Mr Francis Wongnaab said the Nangodi-Yakote Pelungu road which connects the Kongo Senior High School has been tabled before the assembly but the request had not received any favourable response.
He added that though the MP for the area, Boniface Gambila, had engaged the department of feeder roads on the matter; his engagement has been an exercise in futility.
On behalf of the group, Mr Wongnaab, re-echoed, the need for government to swiftly intervene by repairing the damaged parts of the road, if the entire road network cannot be fixed immediately to make it motorable for users.
The petition was received on behalf of the assembly by the Deputy Coordinating Director, John Muniru, for onward presentation to the Regional Minister for consideration.
In a related development, residents of Dacheo, a suburban community in the Bolgatanga Municipality have taken a swipe at politicians for their failure in re-shaping the Dacheo-Kongo-Bolga road, which is a bad state.
The deplorable nature of the road residents say has suddenly become a breeding ground for robbery and other illegal activities such as the snatching of motorbikes.
Relatively, one of community bridges that had been under construction since 2013 has been abandoned with the excuse that the contractor in charge is nowhere to be found.
Naba Thomas Adongo Akaliga is the chief of Dacheo.
According to him, business activities have stagnated because people no longer find it expedient to transact business with the people due to the poor state of the road.
