Bolgatanga market women outraged over new fee

Aggrieved women at the Bolgatanga old market are outraged over what they term as exorbitant market fees being slapped on them by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly.

According to them, the GH¢ 360.00 being charged by the assembly as market fee for the year 2014 is unacceptable, adding that the amount has been imposed on them without the assembly engaging them to come to a common agreement.

They are therefore demanding a significant reduction in the recent tariff considering the current economic hardship coupled with the low sales ahead of the yuletide.

The women say they were taken aback when the MCE denied having any knowledge over the new tariffs upon enquiry.

The market women say though they honour their tax obligations each year, the assembly had been insensitive to their plight, as it has failed in its mandate to make the market conducive for sound trading.

Despite the agitation from the market women, the assembly believes they have acted responsibly to addressing some of the problems faced by the market.

To them, the aggrieved women are being instigated by their leadership who seem to politicize every issue concerning the market.

According to the Assembly, the women were in December last year engaged to discuss the fixing of this year’s fees.

Calls to elect DCEs rubbished

Mr Bankoole Williams, GFD
A member of  the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, GFD, Mr Alexander Bankoole has denounced calls that seem to suggest that once people are  appointed by a particular government to act as DCE means  they are not answerable to the people at the grassroot.

Beyond that, most people think since DCEs are not elected by the people, they are more allegiant to their political parties rather than being responsive to the people they serve.

Mr Bankoole, said what ought to be done, was to examine and strengthen the system that will make them accountable to the people.

He said looking at the constituency level, when MPs are elected, they feel more obliged to the party that put them in power rather than the people that gave them the mandate.

This, he noted, was likely to occur if the country run to simply elect DCEs because they are likely to toll political lines.

Mr Bankoole, identified some loopholes in the current governance system at the local level, stressing on the urgent need to empower and provide capacity support for some units within the assembly system.

On the issue of the winner takes all, Mr Bankoole, said there should rather be a way of tapping into the experience of all and sundry.

He said it was high time the country takes a cue from developed nations where people with requisite expertise and relevant competencies are brought on board the system of local governance in spite of their party affiliations.

Members refuse to retain President’s Nominee

Rejected DCE, Alhaji Alidu Iddrisu Zakari

Members of the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region have turned down the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive.

The former DCE, Alhaji Iddrisu Zakari, whose appointment was revoked few months ago failed to get two thirds of the number of votes cast at today’s special assembly meeting to confirm his re-nomination.

He polled 11 out of the 41 votes cast by elected and appointed members of the assembly.

The re-nomination of Alhaji Alidu Iddrisu Zakari was made possible under Article 243 Section 20 of the Local Government Act, Act 462 of 1993.

Before his removal from office as DCE in September 2014, Alhaji Iddrisu Zakari   lost his bid to be retained as Member of Parliament for the Walewale Constituency in the 2012 NDC primaries to one King James.

He subsequently lost the seat to the NPP in the last general elections.  However, his inability to be retained as DCE was no more a surprise to many as some described his re-nomination as an imposition considering his long stay in office as MP.

Alhaji Iddrisu Zakari, fell below the threshold after failing to clinch 27 votes representing two thirds of the total number of votes cast. 30 assembly members voted against his nomination whilst 11 voted in his favor.

The atmosphere following the declaration of results by the electoral commission was somehow tensed. Anxiety and disappointment were written on the faces of dignitaries that were present to witness the event.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, said though the nominee was not confirmed as expected, the President still have the prerogative to re-nominate his or make him as DCE before a substantive one is chosen.

The former DCE in an address thanked members of the assembly for coming in their numbers to exercise their franchise but said he was ready to comply with any decision to be taken by the President.

He said though he lost, his was prepared to work to the betterment of the district and urged all factions within the assembly to iron out their differences for development to strive.

The  event was attended by dignitaries and party functionaries including the Upper East Regional Minister, James Zuuga Tiigah.

Veterans urges Gov’t to be responsive to their needs.

Veterans in a pose with UE Regional Minister

Veterans at this year’s Remembrance Day celebration in Bolgatanga has requested government to be responsive to the needs of ex-servicemen and compatriots that sacrificed and fought towards the attainment of independence.

For them, the history of the country cannot be told without acknowledging the dedicated effort and gallantry of fallen heroes that fought in the world wars.

They are therefore appealing to government to come to their aid since they feel rejected with majority living in abject poverty.

The 69th Remembrance Day also referred to as Poppy Day brought together chiefs and security agencies including personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Immigration Service.

The key message for this year’s global event held at the premises of the Bolgatanga VAG Hall centered on the urgent need for all to complement the effort of the security agencies in maintaining peace and security.

The day marked by wreath laying and colourful display of marksmanship from personnel of the various security agencies also enjoined government and other world leaders to assist in the international effort of peace keeping.

Addressing the gathering, the Upper East Regional Minister, James Zuuga Tiiga, commended the effort of the veterans as a good number of Ghanaian troops that have excelled in international peace keeping duties having emulated their brevity and sacrifice.

This, he observed, was evident in the performance of the Ghana Armed Forces, which he further noted had received international recognition for its high standard and professionalism.

Mr. Tiiga, however, encouraged all and sundry to emulate their example by trading on the principles of truth, humility and selflessness.

A minute silence was later observed in memory of those that died in line of duty. Prayers were also said for the departed.
