Aggrieved women at the Bolgatanga old market are outraged over what they term as exorbitant market fees being slapped on them by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly.
According to them, the GH¢ 360.00 being charged by the assembly as market fee for the year 2014 is unacceptable, adding that the amount has been imposed on them without the assembly engaging them to come to a common agreement.
They are therefore demanding a significant reduction in the recent tariff considering the current economic hardship coupled with the low sales ahead of the yuletide.
The women say they were taken aback when the MCE denied having any knowledge over the new tariffs upon enquiry.
The market women say though they honour their tax obligations each year, the assembly had been insensitive to their plight, as it has failed in its mandate to make the market conducive for sound trading.
Despite the agitation from the market women, the assembly believes they have acted responsibly to addressing some of the problems faced by the market.
To them, the aggrieved women are being instigated by their leadership who seem to politicize every issue concerning the market.
According to the Assembly, the women were in December last year engaged to discuss the fixing of this year’s fees.
