Bolgatanga market women outraged over new fee

Aggrieved women at the Bolgatanga old market are outraged over what they term as exorbitant market fees being slapped on them by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly.

According to them, the GH¢ 360.00 being charged by the assembly as market fee for the year 2014 is unacceptable, adding that the amount has been imposed on them without the assembly engaging them to come to a common agreement.

They are therefore demanding a significant reduction in the recent tariff considering the current economic hardship coupled with the low sales ahead of the yuletide.

The women say they were taken aback when the MCE denied having any knowledge over the new tariffs upon enquiry.

The market women say though they honour their tax obligations each year, the assembly had been insensitive to their plight, as it has failed in its mandate to make the market conducive for sound trading.

Despite the agitation from the market women, the assembly believes they have acted responsibly to addressing some of the problems faced by the market.

To them, the aggrieved women are being instigated by their leadership who seem to politicize every issue concerning the market.

According to the Assembly, the women were in December last year engaged to discuss the fixing of this year’s fees.

Bolgatanga SHS Temporarily closed down

02/12/14                         Bolgatanga SHS Temporarily closed down
The Bolgatanga Senior High School popularly known as BIG BOSS has been temporarily closed down by management and governing board of the school following student unrest which began yesterday.

Last night some of the students went on rampage destroying school property and setting ablaze a personal vehicle belonging to the one of the Senior Headmasters, Thomas Apana. Mr Apana is alleged to have caused the death of a final year student after he was chased by the master to go for morning assembly.

The students were given an hour ultimatum to vacate the school to allow the police conduct full scale investigation to unravel the mystery behind the death of the deceased student whose corpse is currently deposited at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital morgue.

The Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Thomas Agbanyo, who narrated the incident to Radio Ghana denied earlier reports that suggests the personnel deployed to the school to maintain law and order used tear gas on the rampaging students causing injury to some students in the process.

Early this morning, management of the school met to deliberate on the way forward in resolving the matter. After careful deliberations, management in consultation with the Regional Security Council, REGSEC decided to close down the school till police investigations are over.

The official pronouncement of the decision provoked an uproar from the students. The District Director of Education, Mr Joachim Farrah, mince no words when he made the pronouncement.

Mr Farrah and the District Chief Executive for Talensi, Edward Awunnore, supported the measure describing it as unfortunate.

The decision he noted, is in the best interest of the students since they cannot be sure what will happen in future.

He said though the timing was wrong as students are preparing to write their end of term and mock examination, it decision was still necessary especially when lives are involved.
