Three parliamentary candidates contesting for the newly created
Bolgatanga East Constituency had expressed hopes of winning the forthcoming
December parliamentary elections. They are Rockson Bukari of the NPP, who doubles as a
former DCE for the then Bolgatanga District, Mr. David Apasera of the PNC ,a two
time Member Of Parliament for Bolgatanga constituency and 28 year old, Baba Starling,
representing the PPP. In a separate interview with Radio Ghana at Zuarungu, the
three contesting candidates promised to pull a surprise in the upcoming
parliamentary slot, indicating their resolve to change the fortunes of their
constituents when elected into office. Outlining his vision for the
constituency, Mr. Bukari noted that, the constituency lacks access to good
roads and portable drinking water, adding that sanitation has been a major
problem bedeviling the people. He however assured his people that, when given
the mandate, he would pay much attention to providing access roads and proper
sanitation in the area to help improve the healthy condition of the people. Mr.
Bukari therefore urged his constituents
to rally behind him to fulfill his development agenda. For his part, the PNC parliamentary candidate,
Mr. Apasera promised to make education his topmost priority. Lack of education,
he said was the major cause of poverty among the people, adding that when given
the nod, the people are assured of
quality education .Additionally, majority of the youth would be assisted financially to
attain basic, secondary and tertiary education in order to fit well in the
society. He recalled the numerous times that people in his constituency called
on him for financial support in their education. According to him, this is an
indication of the people’s confidence in him as a leader and that, the people
would surely vote him into power come December. Speaking on the ticket of the
PPP, Mr. Starling, a teacher by profession said considering the trend of global
change in the area of information technology, one of his priority areas when
elected would be to improve ICT education. The construction of libraries would
be given the needed attention since reading plays a vital role in shaping the
thinking of any individual. He said with the assistance of NGOs and concerned
organizations, schools in his area would be equipped with modern ICT facilities
to help boost Information technology training and learning. Meanwhile, the
Deputy Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Azu Bosco, told Radio
Ghana that since the commission had rounded up its voter’s registration and
exhibition exercise, what was left was the training of staff on the
verification machine. Staff of the commission, he hinted, would go round the
communities to sensitize people on the proper way of voting to avoid more
rejected votes. Mr. Bosco assured the public that the EC was on course, stating
that with the collaboration of the police and other sister agencies, the region
was sure of witnessing a smooth electoral process devoid of violence.
