Most
often politicians in their quest and desperation to assume power, resort to all
sorts of ungodly acts. Interestingly, some of these politicians take advantage
of their position to financially induce and influence electorates with money
and other materials which sometimes results in violent behaviours. Realizing
the implication of such practices by politicians, Youth Alive, a child right NGO
with support from Star Ghana has organized a peace walk involving the various
security agencies and station boys at Navrongo to demonstrate the essence of
peace prior to the upcoming general elections and to disabuse the minds of
electorates on empty promises made by some politicians in their desperation to
clinch power. The overarching goal of the peace walk was to also educate the
station boys to ignore politicians that confront them to influence and buy
their conscience with money in order to give them their mandate in the
forthcoming polls. The possession which
began right from the Navrongo District Police Station through to the streets of
the municipality saw students and security personnel holding placards with some
inscription that read: “ Peace a prerequisite for Development” , “We need
peace to develop”, and “ Lets maintain
the peace Ghana is enjoying” among others. Addressing a section of the public
at the Navrongo lorry station, the Assistant Controller of Immigration in
charge of Navrongo, Faisal Dissu urged the public to diffuse the tension that
has characterized the upcoming polls, encouraging all to remain calm whilst the
police and its sister agencies takes steps to ensure law and order during
election day. The security, he assured was on high alert adding that with the
needed cooperation from the public the security was poised to ensure maximum
security. ASP Abdul Latif Nbonwura of the Navrongo Police Command confirmed the
determination of the security agencies in maintaining absolute peace before,
during and after the election. ASP Nbonwura use the platform to caution people
that are bent on fomenting trouble during voting, stating that the police will
deal decisively with such persons when caught. The Navro Pio, Adda Arthur Belinia
in a brief remark encouraged the people to co-exist peacefully and exercise
their franchise peacefully on Election Day. He said Navrongo stands for peace, therefore
any attempt by any person or group of individuals to breach the prevailing peace
will dent the image of the area. The Programs Manager Youth Alive, Conrad Balig
told Radio Ghana that his outfit was committed to ensuring peace in the
upcoming election, adding that its campaign efforts would be intensified to achieve
their set goal. In his submission, Mr David Pwayirane on behalf of the station boys pledged not to allow themselves to be used and influenced with money by politicians.
