Alcohol and substance abuse on the rise in the Upper East

24-02-14
Dep Reg Minister, Daniel Syme

The Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme has described as regrettable the spate of alcohol and substance abuse by the youth in the region and called for attitudinal change to help reduce the menace. In an interview with Radio Ghana,   Mr Syme,   stressed that it was rather unfortunate that the youth who are the greatest asset for national development were engaged vices that have the tendency of jeopardizing their future aspirations. He appealed to all stakeholders in the region including traditional rulers, politicians and opinion leaders to be ambassadors and preach against such dangerous practices. He also enjoined them to embark on vigorous community outreach drives to educate their subjects on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse so as to discourage the youth from engaging in the act. Mr Syme,  intimated that the leadership of the region were doing all they  could to see how it could help play it parts of reversing the poverty situation of the area and  stated that  such efforts would be a mirage  if the youth who are the engine of growth are  left to engage in such social vices. He regretted that the phenomenon was becoming very worrisome and partly blame the cause to indiscriminate citing of drinking pubs. The trend, he noted had contributed to the continuous fall of academic standards among students in the region. Mr  Syme, therefore called for collective effort in dealing with the issue since it has assumed an alarming proportion.
