An
orientation workshop involving key actors of municipal and District Assemblies
has taken place at Bolgatanga with a call on stakeholders to collectively work
towards addressing the continuous fallen academic standards in the region. The
Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, who made the call
challenged heads of the various assemblies to expedite action by organizing
educational fora to tackle the problem. This, the regional minister noted will
help identify the loopholes and enable stakeholders provide pragmatic solution
to deal with the challenge. The meeting brought together key players in
government including Members of parliament and experienced resource persons
among other functionaries. The three day orientation workshop organised by the
Regional Coordinating Council, RCC,
discussed key topics such as the way
forward in tourism, governments school feeding programme, participatory
planning and processes as well as ensuring efficient spatial planning at the
district level. The rest included budgetary processes, SADA, rural
electrification and the role of civil servants among others. The overarching
goal of the meeting was to build the capacities of the assemblies to be able to
work as professionals and practitioners in an environment of trust, teamwork
and with the relevant knowhow. The meeting therefore serves as a platform to
educate the new DCEs so that they will be able to be abreast with the mode of
operation of the organisation and services they provide. It is also intended to
provide constructive contributions with the view to strengthening the RCC in
its role of providing technical support to the assemblies. In a presentation, the Regional Coordinator
of the Ghana School feeding Programme, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, took
participants through the operations of the programme and underlined the role of
the assemblies in ensuring its effective implementation. The Upper East
Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru for his part, bemoaned the
continuous fallen academic standards with particular emphasis on BECE
candidates. The Regional Minister described the situation as appalling and
challenged stakeholders in the educational sector of the region to work
assiduously in bringing about a positive change. He gave some insight into the
academic situation of the region.
