Two girls with special conditions appeals for public support

Two girls with special ailments in the Upper East Region are calling on concerned individuals as well as corporate bodies to come to their aid. The two are in dire need of financial support to enable them to undergo surgery.  They are four year old Akena Akanure, who is battling with a hole-in-heart condition and 20 year old Rita Aduko, who has developed a deep crack in the thigh bone. Little Akanure, was diagnosed with the condition in 2012 after she was repeatedly taken ill. Although the Ghana Heart Foundation has offered to foot half of the ten thousand Ghana cedis required to correct the defect, the family is going through difficult times to raise the rest of the money. The Founder of the Operation Mango Tree Orphanage, Madam Laadi Ayine, who notified the condition of two, disclosed that efforts had been made to raise funds in support of the two victims. She said Akanure had been linked to some child rights organisations, which is yet to materialise. The Acting Regional Director of Health, Lucio Dery, told Radio Ghana that the girl’s survival hinges on donations from the general public and also the Emergency Health Foundation Fund which was launched last year. Due to the condition of little Akanure, the mother who is frustrated in her search for funds says she is willing to offer her to any capable and interested individual. Miss Rita Aduko on the other hand, lost her father when she was a baby and was seriously taken ill when she was seven years of age. Her condition had since worsened as she has developed serious cracks in her thigh bone. Even though she had undergone five surgeries in Kumasi and Tamale, water still comes out from the opening while the thigh is gradually rottening. Miss Aduko is brilliant but can hardly sit throughout lesson periods in the classroom due to the pain and the offensive smell emanating from her thigh. At last year’s WASSCE exam, Miss Aduko could not show up to write one of the papers because her condition worsened before the examination got underway. Whilst some believe that Aduko’s condition has spiritual connotations, doctors have predicted death unless she finds a cure or have the leg amputated from the waist.  Some individuals who were touched by the plight of the two including the Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, Defence Minister, Mark Woyongo and the MP for Nabdam, Boniface Gambilla have donated to save the lives of the two girls.
