Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur has emphasized government’s readiness to facilitate the creation of a separate district for the western part of the Kassena-Nankana District.

He said government will not renege on its promise made to the people of the western zone and that calls for the creation of a new district shall be considered in its next attempt to create more new districts nationwide.

The Vice President gave the assurance in response to renewed calls made by the Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam on the occasion of the 3rd Fao festival held at Chiana in the Upper East Region.

Mr Amissah Arthur also expressed government willingness to improve the lives of the people by expanding the provision of basic infrastructure to benefit needy communities in the district.

Request for the creation of a separate district for Kassena’s in the western zone has been a dream yet to be fulfilled.

The request made by the late Chiana Pio, Pe Rowland Adiali Ayagitam has over the years been re-echoed by his successor, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayitam. This began in the late 60s after the unification of Chiana Local Council with Paga and Navrongo in 1974.

Since demise of the late Chiana-Pio, series of petitions and recommendations by various committees have been presented to past and present governments to assess the situation but nothing concrete had been achieved.

However, renewed calls for the creation of a new district by the Chiana-Pio were to remind government of the promise made to the people.

In an address to climax this year’s Fao festival by the chiefs and people of Chiana Traditional Area, the Chiana Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam said the earnest appeal for a separate district is of much concern to his people considering legislations captured in the local government act, which highlights the critical need for geographical contiguity as a condition in the creation of districts.

He underlined the difficulties in crossing over from one district to the other which he, lamented, has become a stumbling block in bringing local governance right to the doorstep of the people. He called on government to expedite action by responding to their plight.

The Chiana Pio also made a passionate appeal to government to assist the paramountcy with polyclinic and help resolve the numerous infrastructural deficit faced by the Chiana Senior high school which is the only boarding second cycle school in the area.

The Chiana Pio also used the opportunity to congratulate the Vice President on his re-appointment as the running mate of the President for the 2016 elections.

According to him, news about his selection came to him as no surprise considering his proven track record and selfless leadership qualities and wished him well in the coming elections.

For his part, Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur also congratulated the Chiana Pio and the people for a successful occasion, which eventually marks the end of a successful farming season and a time to give thanks to the ancestors for the protection and abundance of food during the farming season.

He described 2015 as a challenging year and recounted the hardship Ghanaians went through in the face of the power crisis.

He said in spite of the challenges, government was able to substantially reduce the electricity deficit, adding that the expansion of power to rural communities will be vigorously pursued to enhance the lives of the rural poor.

The Vice President also cautioned the people against bush burning and other illegal human activities that pose a threat to the environment.

In response to the request made by the Chiana Pio, Mr Amissah Arthur promised to take action on the concerns raised.

This year’s Fao festival chaired by the Paramount Chief of the Paga Traditional Area, Pe Charles Awampaga and celebrated on the theme’ Transforming Lives through Peace and Unity’, brought together revered chiefs as well as sons and daughter of Chiana both home and abroad.

The rich colourful event which was spiced up with traditional performances also saw various dignitaries in attendance.

Among them was the Upper Regional Minister, James Zuuga Tiigah and the MP for Chiana-Paga Constituency, Mr Abuga Pele and a host of other dignitaries.

Funds were raised to solicit financial support for the Chiana Education Endowment Fund set up by the Chiana Pio to assist brilliant but needy students in the area.
