Members of the Prisons Ministry of the Presbyterian Church, Navrongo/Bolgatanga chapter, has donated assorted food items drinks and beverages to the Navrongo Central Prisons in the Upper East Region.
Some of the items include detergents and toiletries.
The items valued at the cost of three thousand Ghana Cedis the provisions forms part of the Ministry’s annual New Year exercise meant to reach out to the inmates in an effort to promote inclusion in society.
Presenting the items, the Regional Chairman of the chapter, Mr. Vincent Chaitey, noted that the presentation was the ministry’s way of supporting the less privileged.
This, he explained was a biblical obligation that enjoins Christ believers to regularly visit prison inmates and share the word of God with them.
The move, he moreover, said was also aimed at complementing government’s efforts in meeting the needs of prison inmates.
In a brief sermon, Mr. Chaitey urged the prisoners not to lose hope in life but rather remain focus with the hope that God will pull them through the difficult times.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Director of Prisons, Superintendent Francis Adzaklo, thanked the association for the New Year gift.
He was grateful for the gesture and called for continuous partnership in addressing the welfare of the inmates.
Supt. Adzaklo, therefore appealed to corporate bodies and philanthropists to emulate the example of the Prison’s Ministry.
The Navrongo Central Prison is home to over 200 inmates and according to Supt Adzaklo the convicts are serving low sentences from mistakes they made due to their ignorance of the law.
A convicted armed robber who is serving a 30 year jail sentence, Bukari Issifu, could not hide his joy on receiving his booty and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Prison’s Ministry and promised the government that they shall come out reformed.
