Afrikids, Ghana last year offered free ICT training to 245 Junior High School graduates in the Upper East Region. About 200 adults in the region were also offered the opportunity to be trained in various computer courses, whilst 44 professionals including accountants and clerks from the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions also benefited from the training package, which was designed to complement government’s effort in providing ICT training in deprived communities of the country.  The Project Manager of Afrikids Academy, Daniel Kpabitey who disclosed this to Radio Ghana at Bolgatanga said Afrikids is currently partnering with some institutions in the region to train students in courses such as typing skills, introduction to computer, Microsoft word and excel as well as internet surfacing and coral draw among others, and mentioned the Bolgatanga Midwifery Training school as one of the beneficiaries. He said Afrikids Academy since its establishment in March, 2006 has offered computer training to most students with the aim of enhancing the IT skills base of school children and adults in the Bolgatanga municipality and beyond. This according to him, gears at creating opportunities in employment and business development for the local economy. The Academy which began with 24 computers now has additional 28 brand new computers valued at the cost of GH¢18,884 at its newly commissioned ICT centre. The new IT centre, he said will ensure high patronage on commercial and public basis and called on students and workers to take advantage of the training package to boost their skills in computer knowledge in order to meet the challenges ahead. He lamented that patronage by students over the years has not been that encouraging and attributed the problem to lack of transport and apathy to the learning of ICT. Mr. Kpabitey therefore appealed to parents to assist their wards in whatever way so that they can make use of the centre.  He however charge students to make use of their leisure time by visiting the centre to learn basic courses in ICT since it will broaden their scope of knowledge in ICT education which is now being offered in most schools as an examinable subject. Mr Kpabitey said Afrikids is ready to assist and partner any institution that is interested in providing ICT education to students and urged the various schools across the region to take advantage of the offer.
