The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo has led a team of delegation to pay an unofficial visit to the leader of the Mamprusis in Bawku. The visit was to present Seidu Daudu, one of the Mamprusis that were involved in a recent attack in Bawku to resettle with his family. Mr Dauda 45, together with Amadu Gambilla, 38 were attacked and butchered on their farms around similinaba near Bawku. The two sustained serious cutlass wounds on the hand and head and were both referred to the Bolgatanga Regional hospital, where they were later transferred to Accra for further medical attention due to the critical nature of their condition. So far four people have been arrested in connection with the attack with two serving jail sentence whilst the other two have been granted bail. Mr. Woyongo who was accompanied by the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Musa Abdullai described the unfortunate incident as regrettable and pledged the support of the police to bring the perpetrators to book. Government he said is committed to finding lasting peace in Bawku, stating that any individual or group of person that is bent on destabilizing the current peace process should think otherwise because the law will take it cause where necessary. Mr Woyongo commended the Mamprusis for their show of maturity and not resorting to acts of retaliation, which he observed would have generated into chaos and continuous bloodshed. He acknowledged the relevance of peace and urged both factions to continuously live in peace and harmony. Mr Woyongo again renewed his call on the need for the Mamprusis to rescind their decision to disassociate themselves from the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Committee and appealed to them to reconsider and return to the negotiating table for dialogue and reconciliation. He noted that peace in Bawku cannot be achieved on a silver platter but rather a collective effort from both ethnic divides. The Leader of the Mamprusis, Seidu Akalifa thanked the minister and the government for their show of concern to issues relating to Bawku. He said for absolute peace to prevail in Bawku, there is the need for a compromise, hence the urgency for politicians to stop fueling the conflict. According to him, Kusasis and Mamprusis were living as brothers and sisters until some unscrupulous politicians began interfering in their affairs. Elder Akalifa used the opportunity to caution politicians not to indulge in acts that will bring division to the people of Bawku but rather use their influence and power to unite them so that they can co-exist peacefully. He said the relative peace currently enjoyed by the people of Bawku is an indication that they are tired of the conflict and would try all avenues to ensure that lasting peace prevails. He commended the security agencies for their support over the years and urged them to work and remain neutral in their dealings. Mr. Woyongo later donated 5 bags of maize and 5 bags of rice for Mr. Dauda and his family for the inconvenience caused.
