Afrikids honours deserving staff and partners

Afrikids Ghana at this year’s annual awards night at Bolgatanga has conferred a joint honorary award to the Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo and the Regional Coordinating Council for their invaluable support and contribution to the fight against child trafficking and other related issues affecting vulnerable children. Mr. Woyongo was personally award for playing an influential role in the repatriation of stranded young people from the region affected by the recent demolition exercise at the Race Course in Kumasi. These affected young men and women who are below the ages of 8 and 15 were evacuated in batches from Kumasi and brought back to the region to resettle with their families.  This year’s awards ceremony which is the 7th in the series to be held in the region also acknowledged other deserving staff and project partners of Afrikids for their enormous sacrifices and dedication to duty. The award categories are Best Core Project for 2011, which went to the Talensi-Nabdam Area Programme whilst the best core project staff went to Miss Cecilia Awiah, a staff of the Bolga Area programme. The Best Sustainable Project category went to the micro finance team of Afrikds with the best partner project given to SINGh Ghana, an NGO for their   strong partnership in bringing quality health care and education to most deprived project areas of Afrikids. Award winners were presented with citations and other household appliances in recognition of their commitment to work which in a way had compacted positively in the lives of poor and vulnerable children. The International Director of Afrikids, Miss Georgina Fienberg said Afrikids Ghana in partnership with its UK collaborators have chalked tremendous successes both in UK and Ghana. She said Afrikids this year claimed four international awards in the charity sector and were runners up in three of the awards given. Afrikids he hinted were awarded for quality branding and also represented as finalist in this year’s best charity event held in UK. Afrikds she moreover said has chalked much success in the area of public private partnership by strengthening close collaboration between Afrikids Medical Centre and the Southampton University Hospital in achieving quality health care to the poor and the less privilege. She commended project partners of Afrikids and appealed for the support of other civil society organizations to help bring hope and smile onto the faces of the disadvantaged particularly women and children. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo for his part pledged his unflinching support for Afrikds and urged them to keep up their good work. He said government is conscious of the efforts made by NGOs such as Afrikds and would continue to partner them in reaching out to the poor and needy in society through its existing policies and interventions.
