Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Daniel Abodakpi, says
he is going to provide a transformational leadership which will earn the
respect of the Presidency when elected as chairman for the NDC. He said as
elected National Chairman for the party, he will not accept any appointment
from the Presidency for board membership or chairmanship of any board because
all board executives hold special expertise but also owe allegiance to the
party. He explained that such positions are sometimes served under ministers
and when that happens, one is likely to compromise the stature and integrity of
the party, thus limiting the respect one expects from the presidency. Mr
Abodakpi however expressed his desire to embark on a solution driven strategy that
will ensure that the party takes it rightful place in national governance. Mr
Abodakpi made this known to Radio Ghana in Bolgatanga as part of his national
campaign tour for the chairmanship position. The NDC is expected to go to
congress to elect new executives on October 24. Mr Abodakpi, who is vying for
the chairmanship position will compete with three bigwigs including the
incumbent, Dr Kwabena Adjei, who contributed in wrestling power from the
opposition NPP after assuming the chairmanship post in 2004. Asked whether it was prudent to go in for the
position after serving the party for years, Mr Abodakpi, opined that he has
what it takes to put his expertise to bear to put the party on a strong footing.
He said having served 16 years as Member of Parliament for Keta and 8 years as
National Executive Council, NEC member for the NDC, he possesses wealth of
experience necessary to surmount the growing challenges of the party and make a
direct impact in the course of the party activities considering its current
challenges. He said when given the nod tendencies where party foot soldiers
disagree with decision of duty bearers will be tackled with all the seriousness
it deserves. According to him, there is some level of disconnection between the
party leadership and the basic structures of the party. Therefore, party members need to be informed
on negativities that are likely to expose the party to ridicule. He hinted that
the party is currently undertaking a membership biometric collation drive to
expose those who forge membership card. On completion, the various
constituencies will be equipped and served with data from the national
level. This, he elated, will help to
remove source of disquiet in the party as tendencies where people are offered appointment
at the blind side of the party will be curtailed.
