NPP confident of fixing the country’s economic downturn

Narration: The 2012 Presidential candidate and the flagbearer aspirant of the NPP, Nana Akuffo Addo, says his party has what it takes to fix the country’s economic down turn if given the chance to rule in 2016. He said the economy in the few years of the Mahama led administration has gone through total recession and has receded economic activities. The trend, he noted, has brought untold hardship to the citizenry.  He said the conditions and prospects of the economy look blur and will not get any better if those manning the state fail to employ prudent competences to effect a change.  Speaking on GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga as part of his nationwide campaign for the flagbearer position, Nana Akuffo Addo said the NPP has the ability to turn things round if it is given the opportunity.  The tour was to solicit support of delegates to elect him as the presidential candidate for the NPP.

Nana Addo said the problem of the country is the management of the national economy. He added that considering recent agitations from organized labour and other interest groups, it was evident that Ghanaians were going through rough and hard times as a result of poor management. This he lamented, was a wake up call for economic redemption. Asked about the wranglings in the flagbearership race, Nana Addo said there was a great deal of propaganda that paints a picture of disunity. For him, there were bound to be factions and group differences in any political group of which NPP is no exception. He said though the leadership contest invariably gives the impression of disunity, the language of the NPP has always been that of unity and is poised to maintain that tradition, adding that the party will remain much united after the congress. Nana Addo, said he was contrary to the propaganda that he is unfit to rule the country. He said his chances of winning are bright and lie in the hands of the delegates.  Nana Addo called on delegates to rally behind him and give him the mandate to wrestle power from the NDC. He charged delegates to ensure that the upcoming congress does not create disunity among the rank and file of the party. His running mate in the 2012 general election, Dr. Mamudu Bawumia, was confident that the NPP was in the position to better manage the nation’s economy. He said the performance of the NPP under Kufuors government was enough testimony that things can be better if given the chance to steer the affairs of the country. Dr. Bawumia, cited corruption, overspending, inconsistency in the policy framework in terms of physical and monetary rates by the current administration as some of the ills of the economy. He said massive overspending has resulted in a budget deficit of eight-point-seven billion Ghana Cedis representing 12-point-one percent of the country’s GDP. Dr. Bawumia underscored the need for a swift recovery through economic transformation, fiscal discipline and pursuing a deliberate strategy of industrialization so as to create jobs for the teeming youth. Dr Bawumia appealed to delegates to vote Nana Addo to enable him to change the fortunes of Ghanaians.
