Metropolitan, Municipal and
District Assemblies have been challenged to expedite action by putting in place
committees that will cater for the promotion and wellbeing of the girl child. The
establishment of the committees will see to the educational needs of girls
particularly brilliant but needy ones. It is believed that when girls are
nurtured through education, they will aspire to take their rightful places in
society. Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme, who threw the
challenge, also, admonished the media to exercise their advocacy role in
ensuring that girls are occasionally put on the spotlight and given the needed
publicity to enhance their social and educational wellbeing. Mr Syme, was
speaking at the opening of this year’s Regional Girls Camp meeting in
Bolgatanga. About 100 girls drawn from the all the 13 districts in the region
attended the meeting organized by the Girl Child Education Unit of the Ghana
Education Service and Action Aid Ghana, an NGO. It also brought together dignitaries
including heads of second cycle institutions and directors of education. Mr
Syme, lauded the effort of the organizers for the initiative taken to empower
girls and encourage them to continue to support the enhancement of their
abilities to aspire to greater heights. This, he observed, will build their
self-concept and confidence to fit well in the current and technological
society. The Pusiga Director of Education, Mrs Janet Kawia, said it was
important for the country to benefit from all her human resource potential, and
having females in leadership roles contribute significantly to her development
process. She urged the girls to prioritize education, develop leadership skills,
and aspire to get the highest level in their academic pursuit. The Senior
Programme Officer of ActionAid Ghana, Joseph Degbedzui, advised the girls to
take a cue from women in leadership and follow their traits. He also urged them
to be of good behavior and leads lives worthy of emulation. There were series of goodwill messages from all
the district directors of education at the function. This year’s event was on
the theme: ‘Securing Community Development through the Empowerment of Girls to Aspire to Inspire’.
