Gov’t must find a lasting solution to feeding grants issues - BONABOTO

BONABOTO, a development oriented pressure group in the Upper East Region has expressed grave concern about boarding students at the various Senior High School in the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West that have been sent home indefinitely as a result of non-payment of feeding grants.

According to the group, the perennial occurrence has contributed to the poor academic performance in the WASSCE over the years, hence the need for it to be given priority attention.

This was contained in a press release copied to GBC Bolgatanga and jointly signed by the Chairman, Francis Atintono and the Secretary, Stanley Abopam.

The statement noted that education is an essential ingredient in containing under-development, poverty and above all the tendency for civil unrest as witnessed in other African countries.

It noted that over the years, these students have had to endure this by successive governments, which have contributed to the widening development disparities in the country.

According to the group, it is not out of place for anyone to think that these actions are carefully crafted to keep the Northern part of this country in perpetual under-development and disdain.

The statement further said, as a country that has acknowledged that there is a yawning development gap between the north and the south that ought to be bridged, the best way to bridge this gap is through positive discrimination in the provision of educational materials and infrastructure.

The group, is therefore calling on government as a matter of urgency, to settle all outstanding arrears owed the schools in Northern Ghana, while in the long run consider a levy or tax policy solely dedicated to permanently funding the feeding grants as is done with GET Fund, Road fund, communication tax among others.
