POLWA intensifies campaign for political tolerance ahead of 2016 election

Rev Mrs Charity Kudalor

The Upper East Regional branch of the Police Wives Association, POLWA, has embarked on a peace walk to solicit support of the general public in preserving the country’s peace and security in the run up to the November, 7 elections.

The Association says for Ghana to consolidate the gains made in her political history, it was highly imperative for security operatives to pursue their constitutional mandate to propagate the message of peace before during and after elections.

Addressing POLWA members in Bolgatanga, the National President of POLWA and wife of the Inspector General of Police, Rev. Mrs Charity Kudalor said the peace march seeks to drum home the need for Ghanaians’ to work towards a peaceful and violent free election.

She said lessons drawn from seemingly political tension and turmoil in some neighbouring war torn countries brings to fore the need for Ghanaians to refrain from tendencies that could plunged the country into chaos.

Since the coming into force of the 1992 constitution, Ghana has successfully gone through peaceful elections, which had strengthened the country’s democratic credentials.

This laudable feat has undoubtedly gained international recognition, thereby making the country an envy of many nations. The peace march was intended to create the needed awareness to sustain the country’s peace and show solidarity to the Ghana Police Service in its effort to maintain law and order.

The procession under the theme: ‘Police Wives March for Peaceful Election 2016”, began from the Regional Police Headquarters with a prayer to intercede for the nation.

Clad in their usual POLWA T’shirts, members were in possession of placards with varied inscriptions calling on the urgency for political tolerance.

Joined by wives of other sister security agencies in the region, personnel went through the business district of Bolgatanga and later converged on the grounds of the police headquarters.

Rev. Mrs Kudalor in a message reminded personnel of the various security agencies of their sacred duty to safeguard the country’s peace and security.

According to her, peace was an expensive commodity that cannot be obtained on a silver platter.

Therefore all hands must be on deck to jealously sustain the country’s prevailing peace by working towards the promotion of peaceful co-existence among all political and ethnic divides.

Rev Mrs Kudalor was concerned about the welbeing of women and children as well as other vulnerable groups, stressing that in times of war, they  are the worst affected.

This she noted has informed POLWA’s resolve to contribute to the campaign for peace.

The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku commended POLWA for the laudable initiative.

He said the service over the years has enjoyed the support of POLWA and maintained that their involvement in the call for peace ahead of the upcoming polls was a source of encouragement and motivation in their quest to effectively deliver on their constitutional mandate to protect the citizenry.

Touching on the theme for the occasion, the Bolgatanga MCE, Philip Aboore, pledged his outfit’s commitment to liaise with the security and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace and public safety prevail in the municipality and the region in general.

He appealed to political parties and their supporters to conduct their political campaigns with a sense of decorum to ensure absolute peace for people to go about their social and economic activities without fear.

Bolgatanga is the 7th regional capital where the peace march had taken place.
