Story by Isaac Asare
Government of Ghana is working towards providing job
opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth in the country.
To this end,
government through the Youth Employment Agency, YEA, is rolling out various
modules to absorb the increasing number of unemployed graduates and youth.
The
overall objective is to create over 100 thousand jobs in view of government’s
determination to assist the youth with decent jobs.
This came to light at the
graduation ceremony of 367 recruits under the Community Policing Assistants at
Pwalugu Training School in the Upper East Region.
The Upper East Regional
Minister, Albert Abongo, who made the disclosure in a speech read for him, said
the training received by the recruits will go a long way to complement the
effort of the police in safeguarding the country's prevailing peace especially
in the build up to the 2016 general elections.
Background
The Community Policing Assistant module is among
the several modules government is rolling
out under the YEA Programme. Other
modules include Community Health Workers, Youth in Prison Service, Youth in
Fire Prevention, Youth in Afforestation as well as Youth in Environmental
Protection and Agriculture.
These modules are specially designed to equip the
youth with opportunity to choose from jobs that will match their training and
interests so they can contribute meaningfully to the development effort of the
country.
Youth in Community Policing is therefore seen as a laudable
intervention in the area of security.
Notwithstanding the massive visibility of
police personnel, government still consider it as imperative to recruit other jobless
youth to support the police in the delivery of their core mandate.
The move has
become necessary considering the level of crime rate and the sophisticated
strategies engineered by criminals to outwit the police in their nefarious
activities.
The passing out of 367 new recruits is to help the police to expand
its visibility in the region. This is the second batch within a state of three
months.
They were made to undergo intensive five weeks intensive training in
community interaction techniques, criminal laws, procedures and investigation,
traffic management, human rights, discipline, foot drills and mental
toughening.
Director at the Training School, ACP Opoku Adusah said the level of
commitment and enthusiasm exhibited in during their training, give a strong
signal that they are up to the task.
He, however, cautioned them to avoid any
infraction that will to undermine the purpose for which they were recruited.
In the first phase of the recruitment exercise,
about 830 recruits graduated after going through the required training
procedures.
The Regional Director of YEA, Roger Abolimbisa, announced that 20
young people have so far been trained under the health module, 122 under prison
service with 122 currently receiving training under fire prevention.
More, he
hinted will be rolled out soon.
In a speech read for him by his deputy, the
Upper East Regional Minister, Albert Abongo implored the new recruits to be discipline
in the discharge of their duties.
He further charged them to operate in a
manner that will not disturb the peace in the build up to the upcoming
election.
The event saw the excellent foot drills to the
admiration of all gathered. Master Collins Azure Ganzah, a HND
Accountancy from the Tamale Polytechnic was adjudged the overall best recruit.
He was presented with a mobile phone and certificate in honour of his sterling achievements.
Present at the event was the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, the Regional
Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku and the Officer Commanding, DSP Wilson
Aniagyei.
