Deprived Communities In Northern Ghana To Switch To Alternative Source Of Energy

Ann: Some deprived communities in the three regions of the north that may not have access to electricity in the next five years or more will be introduced to solar PV systems as an alternative source of energy to improve their lot. This was disclosed by the Marketing Director of Wilkins Engineering Limited, Mr. Akwasi Agyenim Boateng, at a stakeholders meeting jointly organized by the Association of Ghana Solar Industries (AGSI), and Business Sector
R.Tape Advocacy Challenge Fund (BUSAC) at Bolgatanga in the Upper East
T. Tape Region.

ANCR V/O : The workshop which was attended by a section of the public, Representatives from the Regional Health Directorate, District Co-ordinating Directors, Assembly members, energy Consultants and the press, was aimed at sensitizing stakeholders on the need to educate people to adapt to alternative source of energy which is the solar energy. In his presentation, Mr. Boateng mentioned beneficiary district as the Sisala District, Builsa, West Gonja and the West Mamprusi District as the four beneficiary districts for the pilot project. This he explained is partly due to the poor nature of these districts, hence the need to extend solar energy as a form of power to improve upon their living standard. Mr. Boateng emphasized that the project when completed will help bridge the developmental gap between the north and the south adding that the promotion of solar energy in deprived communities would improve maternal health care, enhance reading and learning, promote academic performance of school children and also help to eradiate poverty and extreme hunger in deprived communities.

ANCR V/O A consultant of AGSI, Mr. Frank Adabere said his outfit in 2007 submitted a proposal to BUSAC to carried out an advocacy action on the issue of high taxation on imported solar systems in the country. This action when completed would be submitted to parliament for consideration. Mr Adabre called on the government to ensure a zero-taxation for imported solar systems to make it viable and affordable for users. He Spoke to GTV

ANCR V/O The Manager of Global Sustainable Energy Solutions, Ghana Limited, Mr. Samuel Adu Asare also in an interview with GTV said Ghana ‘s electrification rate has reached an envious level of Sixty Seven Percent ,indicating that an estimated Thirty Three percent of the country are not currently electrified. He described the situation as unfortunate and called on district assemblies to help educate the people on the need to adapt to the use of solar energy.

ANCR V/O The Talensi-Nabdam District Co-ordinationg Director , Mr Alhassan Fuseini shared his experience and desire to encourage other assemblies to consider the use of solar energy for the development of the region and the country as a whole.
