27-10-09 RESIDENTS OF BAWKU ASKED TO GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Owen Woyongo had asked the two feuding factions in the Bawku Municipality to reconcile and unite so as to maintain the existing peace process currently prevailing in the region. He emphasizes the need for people in the area to discard all retaliatory attacks but rather contribute their quota to the realization of the peace process. Mr. Woyongo was speaking at the final funeral rites of the late David Moli Belko, Co-Chairperson of the Bawku Inter-ethnic Peace Committee, who died on the 30th of September, this year at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness. The late David Moli Belko, 64, born in Bawku was a founding member of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee instituted by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in collaboration with the government of Ghana. As a renowned and retired educationist, Belko served in various capacities which earned him laurels from UNICEF and other institutions. Due to his visionary position as the Co-Chairman of the Committee, he was also a member of the Bawku Municipal Education Planning Team and the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Ghana’s jurisdiction, until his death. The late Belko left behind two wives and seven children. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo described the late Belko as hardworking and peace loving man who showed compassion, love, and maturity in his daily activities adding that his death comes as a big blow not only to his family but to the committee in general. He therefore appealed to the people in the Bawku Municipality particularly, the youth to emulate the examples of the late Belko by giving peace a chance. Mr. Woyongo challenged the people in the area to cultivate and practice his virtue and use the occasion to honour his death. He therefore cautioned those who had taken entrenched positions in the Bawku conflict to desist from the act since his outfit will not tolerate any act of violent conflict. He later donated 8 bags of rice, 4 gallons of cooking oil , 14 cartons of minerals and a an amount of 1,500 Ghana Cedis to support the bereaved family. Moreover the leader of the Mamprusis, Alhaji Khalifa in an interaction with the dignitaries present called on the government to do all that it can to ensure that peace is restored to Bawku. Dignitaries present at the funeral include, the Minister of Interior, Cletus Avoka, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Musa Abdullai, Presidential Advisor, Martin Amidu, MP for Garu-Tampane, Azumbe and the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Mrs Lucy Awuni, among others.
